_____________
Truman State University has a long history of excellence in teacher education. Founded in 1867 as a private school to prepare young adults for teaching and commerce, the institution transitioned in 1870 to Missouri’s first state-supported institution of higher education established for the primary purpose of preparing teachers for public schools. Today the Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.) program continues to reflect the university’s 100+ year commitment to quality teacher preparation.

On Thursday, March 22, the ED608 Elementary Management of Instruction students (along with KDP and NEA-SP volunteers) headed to Schuyler loaded with math and science activities for their Spring Family Fun Night. There were approximately 250 students, parents, and members of the Schuyler community who participated. It was a wonderful opportunity for our graduate students to work with families in a welcoming environment. Participants engaged in several activities such as flying paper airplanes, working with tangrams, reusing newspapers to create trees and hats, coloring like Michelangelo, folding origami “jumping” frogs, blowing bubbles, and making oobleck and kaleidoscopes. Fun was had by all. Thanks to Mrs. Jeanne Harding, principal, and Schuyler County R-1 for allowing us to participate in this incredible learning experience!
Thinking about your MAE internship? How about doing it overseas with the Department of Defense?

Representatives from the Kansas City and St. Louis area public schools will be attending the Career and Graduate School Expo here at Truman on Wednesday February 8th to meet with MAE (and pre-MAE) candidates. This is an opportunity to network with school officials as you begin to look toward entering the job market. There is no need to pre-register for the expo. All are welcome.
On November 10, thirty one Truman State University students volunteered at Schuyler R-1 Elementary School’s Fall Family Fun Night. The volunteers set up and managed tables with various activities, such as charting their favorite types of apples, cooking pumpkin pancakes, creating turkey hats, writing with quill pens, making acorn snacks, designing sand paintings, folding origami animals, and other fun fall-time activities. The Truman students assisted 200+ Schuyler students and parents in these activities. Everyone involved had a great time!
The volunteering graduate and undergraduate students are members of four of Truman State University’s professional educational organizations: Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), National Education Association Student Program (NEA-SP), Student-Missouri State Teacher Association (SMSTA), and International Reading Association (IRA). These organizations serve in the surrounding educational communities as well as offer professional development opportunities for their members. Sponsors of the organizations are: SMSTA – Sheila Berkowitz and Laura Nickelson, IRA – Donna Rhinesmith and Bev Perrachione, KDP and NEA-SP – Bev Perrachione.
The internship sign-up sheet is now available in the Field Experience Office for any students who may be interested in doing a fall/full-year internship starting in fall 2012. Students will need to sign up in the office even if they already have access to the Blackboard course with internship forms and materials so we are aware that they intend to do an internship. ALL forms and information will be due in the Field Experience Office no later than February 1st, 2012.
