Digital Portfolio

The Digital Portfolio is an MAE program requirement.  Its purpose is to allow you to demonstrate your ability to meet state and national teaching standards and MAE program competencies. You will also use it as an employment tool to demonstrate growth as a professional educator as well as the ability to use technology.  Below are links to instructions and materials that you may use to build a digital portfolio.

There are two design options available. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. The one you choose depends upon the preferences of your university supervisor and you.  Be sure you consult with your university supervisor before beginning your digital portfolio.

Final versions of digital portfolios must be submitted on CD only. Portfolios submitted on zip disks will no longer be accepted by the Education Department office.

NOTE: the instructions for the digital portfolio include information on how to make your portfolio into an Autorun CD (self-booting CD.)  This will allow your portfolio to open automatically when the viewer inserts the CD into a CD drive.  This feature is a department requirement. It will make it easier for others to view your portfolio and it will give your work a professional look.  You will also need to download the two files needed to make an Autorun CD.  Downloads for the needed files are found in the sections for each portfolio design option.

The Digital Portfolio Committee reviewed MAE portfolios submitted in the Spring and Summer of 2003. From these, the Committee selected exemplary reflections which were then organized into an "Exemplary Reflections Portfolio" for distribution to MAE candidates.  These reflections are to serve as a guide for MAE candidates in building their own digital portfolios.

To view, read, or download your own copy of the Exemplary Reflections Portfolio as a zip file, click on the zip file versionOnce downloaded and saved to a disk or a hard drive, you can "unzip" the file and recreate the folder by "right clicking" on its icon and choosing the "Extract to.." option making sure you name the folder "exemplaryreflections."  You may then view the portfolio reflections by accessing the file named "home."

Performance Indicators gives suggestions on the kinds of evidence that might be used in the portfolio.

Subject Competencies gives the knowledge candidates are expected to possess in their subject fields.

The Action Research Summary describes a research option available to MAE students. This option is especially designed to work well with the digital portfolio. Students may elect to pursue this research option with permission of their university supervisor.

The Digital Portfolio Rubric and Student Guide gives information on how the digital portfolio will be judged.

The Required Components of Reflection page has several helpful suggestions for writing your reflections and engaging your artifacts.

The Word Based Portfolio (multiple word documents)

This portfolio is similar to the browser-based type except that the portfolio is built using Microsoft Word.  The primary advantage to this method is that most files you have created are already Word document files and thus, it is not necessary to convert them to a different format.  Also, it is simple to create hyperlinks in Microsoft Word.  This means that the building of the portfolio is an easier process.

The disadvantage of the Word-based portfolio is that not everyone will have the Word software. Thus, there may be some problems with others viewing the portfolio.  However, current versions of both Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer are standard on the campus at Truman State University and so there will be no difficulty on the part of faculty in viewing it.  If you wish to use this method, but do not have Microsoft Word. You may try using an earlier version of Microsoft Word, however, keep in mind that this kind of portfolio has only been tested and proven with Microsoft Word.

The Word Based Portfolio (Single Word Document)

This version is similar to the multiple Word document version given above except that the entire portfolio consists of one large Word document.  The advantage of this method is that it is very easy to create links within a single document using the bookmark feature of Word.  It is true that the file may be extremely large, however, most computers now have enough RAM to allow viewing without the penalty of lengthy download time.

A major advantage of this method is that the completed portfolio may be converted to Portable Document Format.  This format is easily read by any computer that has installed the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.  This will make your portfolio accessible to people who do not possess the Microsoft Word program
